The company was an established bioprocessing consumables supplier with strong brand equity, trusted customer relationships across biopharma companies and CDMOs, and an established reputation for quality and technical support. After spending 5 years developing breakthrough capital equipment technology, leadership needed to decide how to commercialize the innovation.
The technology addressed real customer pain points—improving media preparation workflows, reducing contamination risk, and increasing process consistency in biopharma manufacturing. But the company operated in consumables—media, sera, buffers, and process liquids. Capital equipment represented new territory with different customer needs, sales cycles, service requirements, and competitive dynamics.
The Research Challenge

Challenge 1: Understanding Real Customer Needs

We conducted in-depth interviews with key stakeholders at prospective customer sites:
Interview Approach: Each 60-90 minute session explored current workflows and pain points through questions designed to uncover decision criteria and buying processes. We discussed value perception and price sensitivity while exploring competitive alternatives and evaluation criteria.
Stakeholder Coverage: We engaged lab managers and scientists (end users), quality and validation teams (technical evaluators), procurement and sourcing (commercial buyers), and operations leadership (budget holders).
This multi-stakeholder approach revealed how different roles prioritized different aspects of the solution—critical for positioning and messaging.
03 | Insight Analysis & Synthesis
We analyzed interview data to extract actionable insights:
Pain Point Validation: We confirmed which technical pain points actually mattered to buyers, identified unarticulated needs the R&D team hadn’t considered, and ranked pain points by importance across different segments.
Value Proposition Refinement: We quantified how customers calculated ROI and payback periods, understood what benefits resonated most strongly, and identified messaging that would resonate versus technical details that didn’t.
Competitive Positioning: We mapped how customers evaluated alternatives, identified differentiators that mattered to buyers, and understood switching costs and adoption barriers.
Pricing Validation: We tested price sensitivity across different customer types, identified budget allocation patterns for capital equipment, and confirmed value-based pricing approaches were viable.
04 | Beta Testing Program Design
We managed the beta testing process and synthesized feedback:
Beta Management: We coordinated equipment installation at customer sites, conducted training and onboarding, maintained regular check-ins during evaluation periods, and provided troubleshooting and support as needed.
Feedback Collection: Through structured interviews we captured performance observations, gathered quantitative metrics on workflow improvements, identified usability issues or design improvements, and documented integration challenges with existing workflows.
Integration into Product Development: We prioritized feedback by impact and feasibility, worked with engineering to address critical issues before launch, and documented customer success stories for future marketing.
